Practice Areas: Paternity
Wisconsin paternity proceedings determine the identity of a child’s father.
This can happen a number of ways:
- Voluntary Acknowledgment
If both parents are sure about paternity, they can fill out a Voluntary Paternity Acknowledgment form with the State of Wisconsin. This will legally establish the father’s paternity and his name will be added to the birth certificate. - Court Ruling
Either the mother or father may bring a paternity suit in court requiring testing that will establish paternity. - Acknowledgment of Marital Child
If a couple marries after a child is born, they may complete an Acknowledgment of Marital Child form, legally establishing paternity.
If you are facing a paternity suit, you are entitled to representation.
The person bringing the suit must prove through legally accepted medical tests that you are the father.
Related terms: Paternity testing, determining the father.
